How to hem a pair of pants step by step

Fixing the bottom of a pair of pants is one of the most useful sewing fixes you can learn. Many times we buy pants that fit perfectly at the waist but are too long. Knowing how to make a bass will allow you to adapt them to your size easily and without having to take them to be repaired.

The good news is that you don't need much experience to do it. With a few tools and following a few simple steps you can achieve a clean and professional result.

Material you will need:
- Sewing scissors
- Pins
- Thread the color of the pants
- Sewing machine (or hand sewing needle)
- Tape measure
- Iron (optional but highly recommended)

*Step 1: Try the pants*
Put on the pants with the shoes you usually wear with them. This is important because the height of the shoe can change the ideal length.
Fold the fabric inward until you find the length you like and pin it in place. Do it on both legs.

*Step 2: Mark the new length*
Take off your pants and place them on a flat surface. With the help of the measuring tape, make sure that the two legs have exactly the same measurement.
You can mark the line of the new hem with fabric chalk or simply with pins.

*Step 3: Cut off excess fabric*
Cut the excess fabric, leaving an extra 3 or 4 centimeters below the marked line. That margin will be the one that we will fold to create the hem.

*Step 4: Fold the bass*
First fold the edge of the fabric inward about 1 cm to hide the cut. Then fold again until you reach the marked line.
Pin the entire hem so it doesn't move when you sew.

*Step 5: Sew the hem*
Sew around the entire leg with a straight stitch, trying to maintain an even distance from the edge.
If you sew by machine it will be faster, but you can also do it by hand with small, regular stitches.

*Step 6: Iron the hem*
Ironing the hem last will make the pants look much cleaner and more professional. This step makes a big difference in the final result.

Sewing tip

If you are just starting to sew, practicing with adjustments such as trouser hems is one of the best ways to gain confidence with the machine. It is a simple, fast and very useful project for everyday life.
